Vaping has long been touted as a safer alternative to smoking, and many even use it to quit. However, a recent and not-altogether-safe trend has started to emerge:
People want to know if they can make their own vape juices at home. Is it possible? Is it safe?
Yes… and no.
Several dozen articles are claiming that it’s entirely possible. Others say you should avoid it at all costs. Naturally, all the conflicting information has raised many questions about the safety of making e-juice at home.
Since we’re inhaling the substances that our vape liquids contain, these safety concerns are valid. Let’s look at why you shouldn’t make your juice from household products, and how you can safely create a flavor that you’ll love.
Don’t Use Household Products
It might sound like a fun experiment to make your own vape juice. However, most household products aren’t safe to consume, never mind inhale. Why risk your health just to save a couple of dollars?
Trusted brands spend millions on developing safe (enough) liquids for us to use in our vapes; the chances of you creating something similar in your kitchen are zero.
Some of the Health Risks
There are a few risks that come with attempting to use homemade e-liquid. In fact, a Detroit teenager had to receive a double lung transplant when his THC oil experiments didn’t turn out as safe as expected.
- Popcorn lung
- Hardened lungs
- Nicotine overdose
- Chemical poisoning
Remember, these are toxic chemicals. Without the proper precautions or training, there’s no safe way to create homemade juice.
Can You Safely Make Vape Juice?
Yes, in a way. You can make the base, but that’s about it. For the rest, you’ll need professional DIY kits that come pre-mixed.
Before you begin, make sure you have all the tools you need. Atomic Blaze is a great starting point, but you can find many excellent DIY kits and approved flavor mixes available online.
Again, never make e-liquid from chemicals at home. Use safe and approved kits or buy proper juice flavors from trusted brands.
Making the Base
E-liquid consists either of Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin, or both. Dilute your VG with 5% de-ionized water, or you’ll end up with a mixture that’s too thick.
If you decide to mix the two, start with an 80/20 VG to PG mix. You can increase the PG, but do so cautiously; it’ll make your mix harsher. If you can, skip this part completely, and just get a ready-made kit.
Get DIY Flavor Kits
Many online vaping shops sell DIY flavor kits. Be aware, though, that there are some pretty poorly made ones on the market. They can be harmful or even fatal. If you decide to go the DIY route, make sure to buy the right equipment from well-known brands.
Once you have your kit, you can mix and match different flavors to create something unique.
Don’t use essential oils, CBD, or THC extracts to flavor your liquid.
Making your own e-liquid is still a trend amongst teenagers, young adults, and frequent smokers. Unfortunately, it’s one of the most dangerous DIY fads in recent years.
If you really want to create liquids or flavors, do so safely. Don’t use any household chemicals and only use ready-mixed kits from safe and trusted brands. Vaping might be a fun alternative to smoking, but only if you do so responsibly.
