What Is a Squonk Mod?
A squonk mod is a vaping device created specifically for drippers. People who like to build their atomizer coils themselves, enjoy these products very much. A squonker mod consists of a battery, bottom-feeding RDA, drip tip, feeding tube, and a squonk bottle (e-liquid reservoir).
A squonk mod is sometimes called a bottom feeder mod as well. A squonk bottle is made of plastic or silicone that one can squeeze in order to push the liquid to the atomizer. Further, the liquid saturates the wick and vaporizes.
Why Do You Need a Squonk Vape?
A squonk vape makes dripping much easier. Usually, a dripper who wants to vape has to drip the e-liquid onto their atomizer coil manually. When one needs to add more e-liquid, they need to take off the RDA cap, take out the e-liquid bottle, place several drops precisely onto the coils and wick, put the cap back, and then vape. It’s a long process that might get too messy and uncomfortable in a wide range of circumstances.
The invention of a regulated squonk mod made a lot of vapers happier. With this device, you do not need to drip the e-liquid all the time. All you need to do is squeeze the squonk bottle for the e-juice to flow and reach the RDA base. The wick and the coil are saturated instantly. And you don’t have to worry about being precise – any excess liquid gets back to the bottle when you release the pressure.
How Does a Squonker Work?
Practically anyone can operate a squonker, because it is a very simple device. You simply need to press the e-liquid bottle via the squonk hole. It will make the e-liquid flow into the atomizer (with the help of a 510-connection) and saturate the wicking material. The moment you release the pressure, the remaining liquid will flow back to the bottle.
The Evolution of Squonkers
The first bottom fed mods first emerged in 2009, when the first commercial squonker, called the JuiceBox, was invented. This device had an atomizer integrated into it. This device hasn’t ever gotten commercially popular because of some construction issues and because its inventor could not fulfill all the orders he received.
However, this device inspired many squonkers that became popular later, like the REO. The first model of the REO squonker was introduced in 2010, and the latest one, called REO P67, saw the world in 2017. The new models operate with external atomizers like 306/801/901 cartomizers and with 510 atomizers.
Squonking is getting more and more popular, and it leads to the invention of numerous new models of bottom feeder mods. Currently, regulated squonk mods are the most popular. Such devices give their user control over temperature and wattage settings, as well as an opportunity to use a 25 mm (in some cases only 22mm) atomizer.
A regulated squonk box is usually bigger than a mechanical box mod because it needs some additional space for the circuit board and some elements that accompany it.
A squonking atomizer is an RDA with modifications that allow better feeding and draining of the e-liquid. The atomizer has a hollow 501-positive pin which allows the e-juice to pass through. The material of the atomizer matters a lot and affects the performance of the whole squonker box mod.
For example, copper and brass may leak into the e-liquid when they contact with it. Stainless steel is the best option because this material is highly resistant. Luckily, nowadays most of the popular RDAs are ready for the squonker.
A Bottom Feeding RDA
In case you use a squonk mod, you have to get a compatible bottom-feeding RDA, called a bottom feeder. The majority of the RDAs that are currently available on the market are pre-modified and have a hollow 510-connection. When it comes to the material, we recommend you to opt for stainless steel.
Any other metals can leak into the e-liquid and spoil the taste. You can also purchase a conversion kit in order to turn any RDA into a bottom feeder. All of the bottom-feeding squonks need to have top airflow because the RDAs with bottom airflow will leak.
How to Choose the Best Squonker?
If you are interested in buying a squonk mod kit, you probably wonder what to look for in a product. The price range is extensive, there are squonkers for every wallet. There are many luxury high-end products as well as decent models of Chinese origin.
Speaking of expensive high-quality squonks, we should mention that they are often manufactured in limited quantities and are hard to find. The budget squonks, on the contrary, are widely available all over the Internet, and you can see a lot of reviews from people who tried these products before you make a purchase. It will allow you to make a well-weighed decision.
A squonk is not a fit-for-all product. Still, a wide range of affordable products makes the cost of entry reasonable. So, if you want to add diversity to your vaping experience, why not give a squonk box a try?
We believe that squonk box mods have a future. The vaping industry is drifting away from dripping and coil building. The majority of users like products that allow vaping without any extra moves involved. However, there are still people who enjoy squonkers most of all. With the best squonk mods, dripping is exciting again. All you have to do to prepare your squonker for vaping is squeeze the atomizer.
Here, you will see the most frequently used terms from the world of squonks.
Squonker – a device or a person who uses an atomizer and a squonk mod for vaping;
Squonking – vaping with a squonker;
Squonk mod – a vaping device containing a pre-built squonk bottle that feeds e-liquid to the atomizer;
Bottom feeder mod – the same as a squonking mod;
Squonk bottle – a container with e-liquid that one can squeeze to pump the e-liquid into the RDA;
RDA – a rebuildable drip atomizer, used by drippers;
Squonk pin – a hollow 501-pin, located on RDA that helps the e-liquid to flood into the base and saturate the coil and the wick;
Bottom-feeding RDA (BF RDA) – a modified RDA that allows flooding of the base by the e-liquid, which is pumped by squonking.
