Introduction to Box Mods
Over the last few years, the vaping industry has been growing at record-breaking speeds. As it always is, people are migrating to vapor cigarettes due to convenience and lower price of consumption.
Millions of people are joining the market every year, and this has been the best driver for the industry to grow and innovate. The vaping market is flooded with products of different shapes and sizes and can provide something for even the pickiest among buyers.
The range of products and accessories is becoming more and more impressive every year. However, as of now, box mods are claiming to be the hottest thing on the market, and growing popularity is proving that it is only the beginning of this wave.
As of 2015, almost every reputable brand in the e-cigarette market has developed at least one box mod option in its product line. And most producers are selling entire lines of mods. The quickly growing popularity of this market segment is even bringing players usually not associated with vape mods. The hype has arrived.
Same as with every product that is new for you, getting started may be a little frustrating. In this article, we’re going to help you gain an understanding of what box mods are, what do they do, and what you should pay attention to when looking for one.
What is the difference between Box Mods and Vape Mods?
Starting with a little history, initially in the e-cigarette world term ‘box mod’ referred to any device that didn’t resemble the standard shape of an electronic cigarette. Most of the time those products had boxy, bulky outer shells, so the name became obvious. However, later on, the term ‘vaping’ became more frequent among users, and mods became ‘vape mods.’
At the same time variations of mods started appearing in a variety of form factors, thus making the term ‘box mod’ inaccurate in some cases. So simply saying, both terms are describing the same thing. If it looks like a box, it’s a box mod. That’s it.
What is the best option for you?
Getting a perfect vape nowadays may seem challenging. Struggle to find the best Vape Mod or Box Mod for your needs and budget is not an easy task, especially taking into consideration different coil setups such as sub-ohm coils, standard coils, and RBS`s.
Most users come into the box mod market after a decision to move on from the eGo type of e-cigarette and get to a new level. Usually, they are looking for more power, more adjustability, and control over vaping experience. And this is precisely where box mods and vape mods are a perfect solution.
Sub-ohm setups are most common. This name comes from ‘sub-ohm’ because less than one ohm of resistance on the coil is produced, compared to approximately 2-ohm of eGo electronic cigarettes. Simply saying, this allows for more power to be delivered, leading to a higher vapor output and overall a better vape.
When it comes to advanced control of different vaping criteria, most box mods are regulated or even digital, this brings a ton of flexibility to the user, allowing for a wattage or voltage variation whenever needed.
However, the most significant game-changer when comparing box mods to a standard electronic cigarette is actually on the power side. Usually, standard e-cigarettes or cheaper versions of box mods can provide you with a maximum 20-watt output. In comparison, a high-quality box mod can provide you with 100-350 watts of power.
But at the same time, realistically speaking this is way more than you might ever need. Comparing to cars, this would be your 2000 horsepower monster truck. Fun to watch, but almost entirely useless.
Usually, this kind of box mod is appealing to people who are crazy over the idea of blowing big huge clouds and showing all different types of vape tricks like smoke circles or other kinds. For a regular user, even a 30-watt device is usually all you need.
Now we’re going to guide you through best box mods available on the market starting from the smaller devices, reaching all the way to advanced options, with functionality like controlled coil temperature and high wattage.

First of all, let’s talk about the best vape mods. These are mostly single 18650 mods or sometimes devices with smaller internal batteries.
Perfect Vape Box Mod for You
As with any other product, picking the best one for you always comes down to a couple of criteria. In the Vape Mod world, those are Budget, Experience, and Goals. So let’s take break them down.
Even though vape mods are considered by many to be the entry-level box mods, nowadays there are vape mods for every budget and level of expertise. Some of them are very powerful and advanced regarding features, and some are very simple. In general, if you are a beginner, we recommend getting a device with as little functionality as you can. The fewer settings are available for you, the easier it is for you.
The price of vape ownership is not only the device itself. When considering the purchase, you should remember the extra expense of batteries chargers and other accessories. Durability is also an essential factor. The longer your device will last, the better value for the money you get.
Do you know what you are looking for? After reading this article you`ll have a better understanding of the vape world, so it will be easier to make your mind. Is it performance or ability to customize you are looking to get? Or maybe simplicity in use? Knowing what you are looking for makes finding the product ten times easier. For example, 50 to 100 watt is enough for most people to enjoy.
For these purposes, a single or a dual battery mod is enough. However, if you are into chasing clouds and looking for extra power, you will probably be satisfied with a triple battery set up or even a quad box mod.
Box mods technical aspects
Back in the days, old-school box mods were available in two variations. With variable voltage and the second one with variable wattage. To avoid confusion, we are going to explain the differences in them, but first, it is essential to understand how electricity works.
There are three measures. Watt, or power. Volts, current (or amps), and resistance (or ohms). Formulas that allow us to determine each variable are known as Ohm’s Law.
Voltage (V) = Current (I) x Resistance (R)
Power (P) = Voltage (V) x Current (I)
With this formula, you can calculate each parameter on your own. However, there are calculators online now for everything, including Ohm’s law. In general, to know your sweet spot, you need to know the wattage of your preferred vape.
And here are some examples. If you are getting your perfect vape with a 2.2-ohm atomizer at 4.2 volts, the relative power you are going to get is around 8 watts.
If you are using a device with variable voltage and a 2.2-ohm atomizer, all you need to do to get to your sweet spot is just to adjust the voltage to 4.2 volts. If you have a 1.4-ohm atomizer, you need to change the voltage to 3.3 volts to hit the sweet spot.
With variable wattage, things are a little more relaxed in general. If we’re taking the same example, if 8 watts is your sweet spot, all you need to do is just to adjust the wattage to 8 watts, the device will do the rest for you and change the voltage on its own.
In this case, your atomizer resistance does not matter. Once you set the wattage, you will get your perfect vape. In general, variable wattage mods are perceived as easier to use.
Mechanical Mods or Box mods?
In the early years of mods, mechanical vape mods were a to-go option when it comes to power. However today, it is not the case. Many variable wattage mods now can produce the same power outputs as the most capable mechanical mods. And they do that while having more safety features and are easier to use for an average customer.
On the safety side, they often have features like auto power cutoff to prevent accidental fire, battery protection, short circuit protection, and many more. So with current box mods, you can be sure, that your safety is on point.
In general, most of the newer advanced box mods offer a ‘bypass’ mode. This mode makes your box mod work like a mechanical mod. But for the majority of vapers, we recommend using precise electronic control of today’s top mods.
Box Mod Batteries
Different types of batteries are used in box mods. The most popular size is by far 18650, being something like a standard, however, 20600, 20700 and 21700 are also available. Here are the three most common types of batteries that are available in vape shops:
– Lithium IMR or Li-Mn
– Protected ICR Li-Ion
First of all, it is important to say that LiPo is only used as internal non-removable batteries. This battery name may appear in conversation among vapers, but these don’t allow for safe usage as removable batteries in mods, so we will not discuss them in-depth.
Lithium IMR in comparison to LiPo batteries are safe chemistry and are recommended to be used with mods. It is important to remember that ICR Li-ion batteries are still found in vapes that are not recommended.
Both Li-Mn and IMR/hybrid battery types are ‘safe chemistry,’ meaning that they are unlikely to explode or catch fire when overheated. This factor makes them significantly safer than other kinds of batteries. Both types are ‘high drain’ and are ‘unprotected.’ These factors make them popular among vape users, heavily influenced by the DIY culture of vaping at the beginning of the decade.
And since then they have become an industry standard. However, when comparing Lithium IMR and ICR batteries, in general, ICR tends to have a higher capacity, but IMRs work best when the heavy current load is needed.
On the other hand, IMR/Hybrid batteries while also featuring safe chemistry, as Lithium IMRs offer more capacity. Hybrid battery technology is the newest on the market and is growing in popularity among users. They provide multiple advantages over both Lithium IMR and ICR making them obsolete. Market analysis is showing that in the future they are likely to dominate the market.
Also, it is important to mention that some electronic cigarette manufacturers are selling batteries ready to be connected to your vape.
Separate battery vs. Built-in battery
Built-in batteries have a couple of advantages. They provide the user with significant convenience as long as you don’t have to worry about batteries at all. All you have to do is plug your device in, and it is charging.
Devices with no removable battery usually don’t require you to buy chargers and separate batteries. They are included in the price of the mod. On the other side, when the battery in your mod dies, it is tough to replace it.
So once the battery is dead, the device is lost as well. This happens, on average, after about one year of usage. Also, you can’t swap batteries when the one you are using now is dead. Once the battery is dead, you have to stop vaping and recharge.
Separate vape batteries offer a significant amount of freedom and allow for additional customization. You also can swap them out when needed. On the other hand, they usually cost extra when purchased with the device and require a separate battery charger. Charging them inside your mod is not recommended.
Box mod advantages
In general, when comparing box mods to regular electronic cigarettes, we can see that box mods provide multiple advantages. Mainly all of the benefits are concentrated in two categories. Power and control. First developed by advanced vape users, they are designed to make every aspect of your experience perfect by opening almost every detail for you to control.
Of course, this makes size a sacrifice, but everything has its price. What you are gaining is overall better vaping experience with high performance, higher power outputs, and more precision control.
Another significant box mod advantage is the range of products on the market. Insane competition makes it hard for every market player. Companies are doing their best to deliver the best product in every price category available. The free market concept works at its best in the vaping industry. Therefore a consumer is who wins in the end.
Stepping your Vape Mod game up
Vape mods with firmware updates
Most expensive vape mods come with operating systems. Those mods are usually in a pro category. You can connect your device to your computer and download the latest operating system update directly to your device. This may expand the functionality of your mod as well as make it more efficient altogether.
Custom firing profile
Also, some advanced box mods offer a feature called custom firing profile. This means that you can program your mod to fire automatically for a period of up to ten seconds.
For example, your box mod will burn at 100 watts the first second that you are pressing the fire and lower the power output for every next second or the other way around. However, most users don’t hit the button for as long as 10 seconds. So for the average user, it may not be a significant buying factor.
Buying the right box mod may seem hard, but we hope we made it at least a little bit easier. Stay away from cheap unreputable brands and always check what you buy, whatever you go with really depends on your style of consumption.
Go with a big name and ask around, people in the community will be happy to help you out. Consume safely and responsibly and stay healthy!
