Firefly 2+ Review
If you are into dry herb vaporizers, chances are you’ve heard about the Firefly brand and its line of products. The most popular and on-demand option is the Firefly 2 model as it not only looks sleek but can easily heat up in an instance.
But we aren’t here to talk about the 2nd model, instead, we’d like to bring your attention to the Firefly 2+ model. The reason why we decided to talk about the 2+ and not the 3rd model as it’s more of an upgrade than a brand new product.
But in spite of being an upgrade, it punches quite a few cool upgrades that we’d like to talk about. Thus, without further ado, on to the Firefly 2+ review.
Firefly 2+ vs Firefly 2 — What’s the Difference?
Before we jump into a full-blown review process, we’d like to cover the key differences between the core model and the plus model. There aren’t that many changes, but the visible ones are pretty substantial.
- Price Tag: One of the key things we’d like to stress out is that the new model has a lower price tag. Yes, you’ve heard us right, you get more for less. And that less is $80, which is a pretty good drop if you ask us.
- Fewer Draw Restriction: If we had to pick one flaw the original model had, it would be the fact that the draw was tight due to resistance. But with the new model, you can rest assured knowing that everything was taken care of. The average level of resistance was improved (around 30%) meaning that it is easier to enjoy produced vapor.
- Updated Logo: While it is a super minor change, it’s nice to see how the light that is underneath the viewing portal starts to light up when you power the thing. It’s the small details that matter.
- Better Battery: Another thing that is worth mentioning is the fact that the gadget is miles better when it comes to battery consumption.
Kit and Accessories
Upon ordering the Firefly 2+, you can expect it to come with the following accessories/necessities:
- Manual
- Charging dock
- Firefly 2+
- Concentrate pad
- USB 3.0
- A cleaning kit
- Rechargeable battery
Outside of the core pack, you can also purchase a wide range of additional accessories. We suggest that you get a nice herb grinder to fully unlock the Firefly 2+ potential. With it, the herbs will get heated more evenly, meaning you’ll get a better taste.
The Firefly 2+ Design
If you look at the device, you will say that it’s practically the same thing as the OG model. And that is correct but the amount of quality of life adjustments made to it cannot be understated.
First off, one of the key components of the Firefly 2+ is the touch sensor that is on the side of the device. By holding it lightly you will initiate heating and in case you don’t like the stock positioning, the smartphone app will allow you to customize other sensors.
Just like in the original, you have the magnetic cover, as well as the touch sensor on both sides of the gadget. Some people love the positioning whereas others find it weird as you have to hold the device in a strange way.
Granted, you don’t need to hold the thing for too long since each draw is equivalent of a hefty vape session. Anyway, there’s the app that will allow you to control the device, which does alleviate some of the weirdness.
The portability of the device is also great as it’s small and shaped in a pretty convenient way. Generally speaking, the Firefly 2+ is way more pocket-friendly than its box style counterparts thanks to the fact that the edges are rounded, meaning that the device slides more easily.
This makes it easy to take a quick two or three hits on the go, and if you are worried that the mouthpiece will get dirty, you can remove it effortlessly.
As for the build quality, you will be pleasantly surprised as both the body and the lid are made of magnesium alloy. The viewing portal was made from quartz and the heating chamber was crafted using ceramic superalloy.
All this helps ensure the purity of the vaped weed and superb durability. But that is to be expected considering the price range of the device.
The Companion App
Along with the device, you can download a free Firefly 2+ app that will allow you to do all sorts of things with your vaporizer.
As we’ve mentioned previously, you can remap the activation buttons but what we didn’t say is that you can set up activation temperature. Also, another part of the functionality list is its over-the-air software update.
The application allows you to calibrate what kind of flavor you would like. You get to choose from two options, rich and smooth. The app also has a database of links that contain video tutorials, which is great for newbies.
Lastly, the application itself is pretty sleek and responsive in terms of design. The UI is easy to navigate and never did it hang or refused to connect with the vape itself. The best part of all this, it’s available for both Android and iOS.
Maintenance Process
Similarly to the original product, the 2+ requires little to no maintenance but you do need to take care of a few things.
First off, for any vaporizer to work properly, you need to take good care of your heating chamber. To clean it, we suggest that you use the small brush to take out the bigger pieces of scraps.
Once you’ve done that, you can proceed to use a cotton swab. Dip the swab into alcohol and gently wipe the rest of the chamber and let it breathe for a while.
In case you don’t have a swab at hand, you can always use a wipe soaked in alcohol. And to clean the mouthpiece, all you have to do is take out the pick from the cleaning kit and you are good to go.
How to Use
The Firefly 2+ is pretty easy to use with both dry herbs and concentrates alike. Here’s how to use the device with each type of filling.
Dry herb
- Remove the old lid, place your herb, then use a new one to close it
- One closed, gently touch the sensor to initiate the heat process
- As soon as you see the green light on the logo, the heat process is complete
- Start using the device
Concentrates
- Just like we did with dry herb, you need to remove the lid and place the concentrate pad to the chamber
- Then you need to dab wax onto the pad itself and then remove the lid
- Start the heat process by touching the sensors
- Once the logo blinks green, you can start using the vape
Note: We suggest that you set up your temperature range from 210°F – 500°F
Dynamic Convection System
Now if you’ve been looking at the device online, you might have noticed that the vendor likes to mention dynamic convection capabilities of the device.
It means that the device will try to distribute hot air in a way that will make all your herbs heat evenly, resulting in a much richer flavor.
But that’s not all as the device can easily increase its temperature on demand. To put this into perspective, every time you do a draw, the device will heat itself from average room temperature up to 500°F and once you are done, it will go down again.
So why this is good news for vapers? Well, you see, marijuana has several terpenes that are vaporized at different temperatures. Most vaporizers operate at a fixed temperature and cannot cover each terpene.
Firefly 2+, on the other hand, is capable of covering all those terpenes as it increases the temperature gradually. This feature alone can give you a better experience as it covers the full spectrum of marijuana.
Vapor Quality and Performance
The general performance of the device is pretty solid thanks to the above-mentioned system.
We performed several tests using both dry herbs and concentrates but before we jump into the results territory, let’s take a moment to look at the vaporizer performance itself.
Vaporizer Performance: So, since Firefly 2+ is an on-demand device, the heating process takes up to three seconds on average.
And since you will be using it for quick vaping sessions, you don’t need to worry about it getting hot or uncomfortable to hold. But if by any chance you decide to use the thing for a prolonged time, it will get hot.
Dry Herb Quality: Thanks to how the device was built and thanks to the dynamic convection system, the Firefly 2+ always delivers excellent dry herb taste. And since the draw resistance was lowered, the process became even better.
The hits feel strong so in case you are a newbie, take it easy as even vets get surprised by the results. The vape itself doesn’t get hot or anything and the amount of vape is slim because most of the weed gets vaporized and inhaled.
Concentrate Quality: While not as strong as the weed performance, the device still dishes out some impressive results despite it being made for herbs.
The hits are not super strong even on max performance mode but for newcomers, this is a perfect product as you can technically scale it without the need to buy extra accessories. But if you are veteran, we suggest that you stick with herbs.
Battery Life: The battery life in Firefly 2+ is pretty solid, especially considering its main purpose. We were able to get around seven blows before a charge, which is excellent.
Each blow was somewhere between eight draws, which means that you get around 64 draws per charge. The charging process is quick, clocking in at 45 mins and the battery itself is removable.
Ghost MV1 vs Firefly 2+
The Firefly 2+ has only one competitor on the market, the MV1. This not only shows why such vapes are rare but how unique they are. So, the MV1 is a pretty similar device to the 2+ as both have a dedicated smartphone app, as well as they are a dual-use vape.
However, MV1 falls flat in the heat department. It uses a regular convection system, meaning that the flavor is not as good as the 2+, plus the device is a tad larger. Still, the MV1 is a good option but if we had to choose one, that would be the Firefly 2+
To Sum It Up
The 2+ model is exactly what regular Firefly 2 users wanted. The updated product addressed most of the issues the OG had and introduced a few extras that help it stand on its own.
You get lower draw resistance, better battery life, and to top it all off, the price is significantly lower. A very good product that, in our opinion, can easily rival the new Firefly 3 as it offers great vaping at a low price.
